Whole-House Remodeling Over $500,000: Merit

Originally designed by architect Franklin Ellerbe in 1907, this Tudor-style home in Saint Paul, Minn., endured a whole-house overhaul, including parts renovation, restoration, and addition.

The porch-like addition, designed by David Heide Design Studio, was built off the kitchen by knocking out a wall, creating a small family room that could also function as a breakfast nook. The interior was fitted with birch cabinets, windows, and floors. And from the exterior, the addition blends with the existing accents. “The way the porch was added, you wonder if it was new and added or simply refurbished,” one judge commented.

For the remodel, the team worked with the home-owners to include period-appropriate details that fit within the home’s historic context. The team knew the original wood species at the back of the home was red birch, and it became central to the home’s redesign.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The owners wanted a period-appropriate kitchen analogous to the 1904 house. While fitting aesthetically within the historic context, the kitchen needed to be functional for life today. Maintaining a visual connection to the garden was also important.
